Habitat pruning in the urban environment – Part 3

So now you have seen the Brisbane Tree Experts team doing what we do best! The large and important landscape tree can now be safely retained in close proximity to the surrounding built environment, and will continue to provide important habitat into the future.

So what other pruning techniques can we apply as qualified arborist’s to create artificial habitat in similar trees without having to wait for natural hollows to form? A recent paper produced by the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation (VTIO) provides us with information on how, as arborist’s, we can create artificial hollows by utilising more specialized pruning techniques. We must however gain an understanding of the basic requirements of the type of wildlife that we are trying to attract, in order for this type of habitat creation to be successful.

Consideration regarding a range of factors is necessary, and the written material which was produced by the VTIO can be found by following this link via the Queensland Arboriculture Association (QAA) website. This paper provides more detailed information on the pruning techniques and considerations required by the qualified arborist when assessing the potential for artificial habitat creation.

Brisbane Tree Experts are committed to providing sustainable arboriculture to south east Queensland and we aim to be at the forefront of the tree care industry by keeping up to date with modern techniques and cutting edge technology. With this in mind we have introduced a range of ‘green initiatives’ and operate in an environmentally friendly and socially responsible manner.

We fully endorse and promote the application of artificial habitat creation throughout the urban forest, and would be happy to discuss how these modern techniques in environmental arboriculture may be applied to your future tree care requirements.

Remember, always use a qualified arborist! Habitat pruning may not be appropriate and involves a wide range of assessments in relation to tree structure and risk management. The Brisbane Tree Experts team can assist you with an appropriate tree care strategy.
